Awakenings and Dekmantel in the Netherlands pull the other way: more tightly curated, closer to the club culture the music came from, and drawing crowds who come for the artists rather than the spectacle.
Between those poles sits a range of specialists. Defqon.1 champions hardstyle and hardcore with one of the largest artist counts of any festival in Europe. Kappa FuturFestival occupies an industrial site in central Turin, while Nature One in Germany takes over a decommissioned missile base. Sónar in Barcelona pairs concerts with a conference on music and technology, and falls earlier in the season than most.
The practicalities differ from rock festivals too: many of these events are single-day or city-centred, with fewer camping options and shorter nights than the billing implies.
